At Avenue Preschool, children are actively involved in a developmentally-appropriate curriculum that emphasizes the social, emotional, physical and academic aspects of their development.
Our curriculum includes:
--DE Early Learning Foundations for Kindergarten Readiness
--The Creative Curriculum
--Handwriting Without Tears
The curriculum provides enriching experiences with language arts and literacy, math problem solving skills, science exploration, social studies concepts, small and large motor skills, music, art, dramatic play, and sensory activities. The children's days also include a nutritious snack and outdoor playground time.
Avenue Preschool offers classes for children ages 3, 4 and 5 as outlined in the sections below. The regular school year begins in September and runs through May. Further information can be found as follows:

The Pre-Kindergarten program is for children who have turned four by August 31st of the up-coming school year. Families choose either a 2, 3, 4 or 5-morning per week session. Children ages 4-5 prepare for kindergarten through the exposure to a variety of hands-on early childhood education units and fun learning centers. Our staff of teachers and assistants have a common goal--to provide children with an atmosphere in which they can develop a positive view of themselves, which will help them successfully transition into kindergarten.
The Beginners program is for children who have turned three by August 31st of the up-coming school year. Families select either a 2-morning per week or 3-morning per week session. Teachers and assistants of the Beginners classes support children with developing skills for building strong self-reliance and positive social interaction. The children's days are filled with plenty of opportunities to actively explore the classroom's enriching learning centers.
(May be offered for school year 2021-22; not being offered for school year 2020-21)
The Pre-Beginners program is for children who are still two-years old as of August 31st but turn three between September 1st and December 31st of their initial school year at Avenue. This program is held 2 afternoons per week. Teachers and assistants of the Pre-Beginners classes support children with acclimating to a small group environment, while developing peer-interaction skills and personal confidence. The children's days are filled with plenty of opportunities to actively explore the classroom's enriching learning centers.
(May be available for school year 2021-22; currently not being offered)
We offer the option for our students to enjoy an extended day at "Lunch Bunch." This program runs on certain afternoons October through May, and is a popular, fun time filled with continued enrichment opportunities.
Pre-K students' Lunch Bunch sessions are from 12:00-3:00. Beginners' Lunch Bunch sessions are from 12:00-2:00.
Several week-long summer day camps are offered for children who have completed the school year at Avenue Preschool.
Summer camp takes place from 9:00-12:00 Monday through Friday during certain weeks. Registration begins in May and continues until all spots are filled. To register your child, please contact the preschool office. Annual details about registration will be located here and placed on our "News and Events" page as camp time approaches (updated in the spring of each year prior to camp registration). Registration information is also sent home with current preschool families each spring.
Camps include snacks, fun crafts, indoor & outdoor activities, and special events.
Our 2019 summer camps were awesome--check out the details!
Week 1 (June 3-9, 2019): Dino Camp! Campers will become a paleontologist for a week! They will find fossils, create a volcano, learn about and even walk like dinosaurs, drive in our paleontologist jeep, and enjoy unique crafts and snacks.
Week 2 option #1 (June 10-14, 2019): Let's Grow Some Fun! Campers will join us for a week of seeds, plants and flowers. Your child's knowledge of plants will "grow" through songs, books, activities and crafts. We hope to create a "budding" interest in all things green!
Week 2 option #2 (June 10-14, 2019): Under the Sea! Campers will enjoy a fun week of learning about what could be and is actually under the sea. They will enjoy water play while learning about water safety, sharks, mermaids, whales and other interesting critters.
Week 3 (July 15-19, 2019): World Travelers! Grab your passport and come enjoy learning about different cultures and countries. Campers will "go around the world" to find out what it is like to be where some of our favorite story characters are from.
Prior summer camp themes have included:
Fun at the Fair
Let's Grow Some Fun
Beach & Boardwalk Fun
Water, Water Everywhere
